How to Access Server Using FTP

Introduction

This guide explains how to access your server using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). FTP allows you to transfer files between your local machine and the server. It is commonly used for managing website files on a hosting server. This guide will walk you through the process of connecting to your server using an FTP client, such as FileZilla.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding, ensure you have:

  • FTP credentials (hostname, username, password, and port).
  • An FTP client installed (e.g., FileZilla, Cyberduck, WinSCP).

Steps to access your server using FTP

1. To FTP into your WordPress, you’ll need a client and we recommend you to use FTP client like Filezilla. This can be downloaded from here.

2. After Filezilla successfully installed, you can proceed to use them to access your server using sFTP first.

Open your Filezilla client and type “sftp://<server-ip-here>” in Host followed by Username and Password. You can leave the Port to be blank as it will use default FTP port. Then, press quick connect.

3. You’ll log in as root as that’s the only login you have right now for the server. And you’ll be able to access, write and delete files.

This is dangerous as it will be problematic if we accidentally remove files that we shouldn’t.

4. To set up a SECURE FTP session, refer to the tutorial below on how to set up secure FTP access.

Accessing your server via FTP allows you to easily manage files on your web server. By following these steps, you can upload and download files between your local machine and your server.
