Introduction

This article provides a step-by-step guide to exporting an SSL certificate from cPanel. Exporting a certificate is essential when migrating to a new server while retaining your SSL configuration, installing the certificate on multiple servers, or keeping a secure backup of your SSL files. This guide is intended for cPanel users and administrators looking to export or obtain their SSL certificate and private key files securely.

Prerequisites

  • Access to cPanel
  • The SSL certificate must already be installed on the domain you want to export from cPanel.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Access SSL in cPanel

  • Log in to your cPanel account. eg. https://yourdomain.com.my:2083
  • Scroll down and navigate to the Security section and select SSL/TLS Status.

Step 2: View and manage SSL certificates

  • Locate the domain associated with the SSL certificate you want to export and click view certificate.

Step 3: Export the SSL certificate and private key

Important Note: Keep your private key secure and avoid storing it in insecure locations or sharing it.

  • Copy the Certificate:
    • Under the Certificate (CRT) section, copy the entire certificate text, including the —–BEGIN CERTIFICATE—– and —–END CERTIFICATE—– markers.
    • Paste this into your preferred text editor.
  • Copy the Private Key:
    • Under the Private Key (KEY) section, copy the entire private key, including the —–BEGIN PRIVATE KEY—– and —–END PRIVATE KEY—– markers.
    • Paste this into your preferred text editor.
  • Copy the CA Bundle (if available):
    • If there’s a Certificate Authority Bundle (CABUNDLE) section, copy the text (including the —–BEGIN CERTIFICATE—– and —–END CERTIFICATE—– markers).
    • Paste this into your preferred text editor.

Step 4: Store or transfer the SSL certificate files securely

  • Once you have saved the certificate, private key, and ca root certificate files, ensure they are securely stored.
  • For transferring to another server, use a secure method such as SCP, SFTP, or an encrypted cloud storage solution with restricted access.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you can export your SSL certificate and private key from cPanel for backup or transfer to a different server. Always keep your private key secure and ensure the exported files are handled with care to prevent unauthorized access.
