How to solved Outlook keep prompt “enter network password”

Last updated on |

Introduction

This article explains how to resolve the issue where Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2010 users are repeatedly prompted to enter their password when connecting to a POP3 email account, even though the password was saved. This article is intended for Outlook users facing issues with saved passwords.

Important Note: This article pertains to Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2010, which are both End of Life (EOL) products. Microsoft no longer provides official support or updates for these versions. While this guide may still resolve the issue, we recommend upgrading to a more recent version of Outlook for better security, performance, and continued support.

Symptoms

Each time you use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 to connect to your POP3 email account, you may be prompted to enter your password, even though you have specified that it should be saved in the password list.

Cause

There are two common causes for this issue:

Cause 1: You entered your password incorrectly or your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has changed your password.
Cause 2: The registry contains incorrect information for the Protected Storage System Provider subkey for your user account, even though your password was saved.

Resolution

Cause 1: Incorrect or changed password

If your ISP has changed your password or if you have entered it incorrectly, Microsoft Outlook will need to be updated with the correct password. Microsoft cannot retrieve your old password, so you will need to contact your ISP to have them assign a new password to your account. Once you receive the new password, follow these steps:

  1. Contact your ISP to obtain your new password.
  2. Update your email account settings in Outlook with the new password.

Note: Unless specified by your ISP, all server and address entries should be typed in lowercase letters. Some ISPs require passwords to be case-sensitive (i.e., a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters). Contact your ISP to confirm if this applies to your password.

Cause 2: Incorrect registry information

To resolve issues related to incorrect registry information, follow the steps provided in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 290684. This article will guide you through the process of removing your user account information from the Protected Storage System Provider subkey in the Windows Registry and re-entering your password options in Outlook.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue of Outlook repeatedly prompting for your network password. However, since these Outlook versions are EOL, it’s highly recommended to upgrade to the latest version of Outlook for continued support and better security.
